I was born in Detroit Lakes, MN, where I spent all of my childhood.  In high school, I was selected for the Junior National Biathlon Development Team.   I attended Dartmouth College where I became a white water kayaker and president of the Ledyard Canoe Club, continued to ski as a member of the varsity ski team, and developed a passion for physics.  In 2002, I moved to California to get a Masters and PhD from Stanford, and in 2008 I married my wonderful wife Maureen.

My hobbies include kite boarding, trail running, cross-country skiing, triathlons, playing music, traveling, and building things.
